It’s completely possible to formulate your own, professional standard natural, organic and vegan eye makeup products at home. Some products are very straightforward with the right know-how, while others, like mascara, may seem daunting. That’s why we are here to take you through the process, step by step!
Ten reasons to formulate your own advanced, natural eye make up products at home
Here are ten reasons we encourage you to formulate your own natural eye makeup products:
- Create natural, organic and/or vegan formulas – the choice is yours! You can adhere to standards such as COSMOS or Ecocert if you wish.
- Experiment with different formats and formula types – pencils, crayons, anhydrous ‘creams’, liquid eyeliners and even mascaras.
- Have fun blending your own pigments in neutral or bright colors, and choose the finish you like – matte or shimmery.
- Use gentle, nourishing, natural or organic ingredients such as oils, butters and waxes as the base of your formula.
- Some products can be fragranced by including essential oils or you can create an entirely fragrance-free range. Products used in very close proximity to the eye (eg mascara, eyeliner) are best left fragrance-free.
- If you already make skincare products you probably already have a lot of the ingredients and equipment you need.
- Advance your formulating skills into a whole new area.
- Learn new techniques such as how to fill pencil containers to make eye and eyebrow pencils.
- Save money compared to buying expensive organic brands and replenish your makeup bag yourself when you run out.
- Create your own natural makeup and color cosmetics brand!
Would you like to create your own full range of beautiful, advanced, professional natural, organic or vegan color cosmetics that are safe and environmentally friendly?
Our module on Advanced Eye Makeup within our Diploma in Formulating Natural Makeup and Advanced Color Cosmetics takes you through everything you need to know.
What natural eye makeup can I formulate at home?
Color cosmetics for eyes are actually designed for three different parts of the eye area: eyelids, eyelashes and eyebrows. This means that there is a vast range of eye makeup products that have different functions.
Products for eyelids:
- Loose powder eyeshadow.
- Pressed powder eyeshadow.
- Cream eyeshadow.
- Cream-to-powder eyeshadow.
- Eyeshadow crayon.
Products for eyelashes:
- Liquid eyeliner.
- Eye liner pencil.
Products for eyebrows:
- Eyebrow powder.
- Eyebrow pomade.
- Eyebrow pencil.
- Eyebrow gel.
Each eye makeup product is designed to add color or emphasize the eye and comes in a variety of formulas, from dry powder to water-based gel or emulsions. There is a product and a color to suit everyone’s preference!
Formulating natural eyeshadows
Beautiful cream and cream-to-powder eyeshadows use thickened esters, oils and powders to form a creamy balm that creates a silky soft skin feel in a range of neutral, modern or fun colors. We’ll share the formulating tips and tricks for cream-to-powder products that create a silky, powdery after-feel. Depending on the color and finish, you can also double your product up as a blush, highlighter, bronzer or lip tint, for a multi-functional eye cosmetic.
Eyeshadow crayons can also be made at home, and are a fun and easy to use eyeshadow format. Use a pigment blend of your choice and create makeup that is truly personal to you!
Formulating natural eye liners and eyebrow pencils
If you’d like to make professional and effective eye and eyebrow pencils, we have just the formulations! We share step-by-step instructions, including a video demonstration, so you can see exactly how to formulate and make eye and eyebrow pencils, including how to fill them into the pencil packaging.
Liquid eyeliners are another popular product that can be formulated at home. We use a gel-based formula with special natural film-formers to provide longevity after application.
Formulating natural mascara
Mascaras can be tricky to make which is why we include both a beginners’ formula and an advanced formula. With our step-by-step instructions and video demonstration you’ll handle that process with ease and successfully make high-quality, professional mascaras that are safely preserved. Our beginners’ mascara formulation is vegan too!
All our professional advanced eye makeup formulations use natural and organic ingredients, adhere to COSMOS standards, are safe, are fully tested by our cosmetic scientists and they all feature in our Diploma in Formulating Natural Makeup and Advanced Color Cosmetics – one of the few natural makeup courses on the market tailored to home formulators. And you could be a part of it!
Preserving natural eye makeup products properly
Since products like liquid eyeliner and mascaras contain water, they need to contain preservatives. Because the product is used close to the eyes, any kind of microbial contamination could result in an eye infection, so it is very important to use a broad-spectrum preservative to preserve eye products.
Creating a full broad-spectrum preservative system by using a preservative booster and/or chelating agent in addition to a preservative blend is a good idea. At the same time we need to make sure none of these ingredients irritate the eye.
And, yes, the preservatives we used are permitted in natural and organic makeup and approved by the COSMOS standards.
Our advice: Don’t take chances with the preservation of eye makeup. If you are going to formulate eye makeup products, you need to know how to preserve them effectively.
