Ten reasons to formulate your own advanced, natural eye make up products at home

Here are ten reasons we encourage you to formulate your own natural eye makeup products:

1. Create natural, organic and/or vegan formulas – the choice is yours! You can adhere to standards such as COSMOS or Ecocert if you wish.
2. Experiment with different formats and formula types – pencils, crayons, anhydrous ‘creams’, liquid eyeliners and even mascaras.
3. Have fun blending your own pigments in neutral or bright colors, and choose the finish you like – matte or shimmery.
4. Use gentle, nourishing, natural or organic ingredients such as oils, butters and waxes as the base of your formula.
5. Some products can be fragranced by including essential oils or you can create an entirely fragrance-free range. Products used in very close proximity to the eye (eg mascara, eyeliner) are best left fragrance-free.

What natural eye makeup can I formulate at home?

Formulating natural eye liners and eyebrow pencils

Preserving natural eye makeup products properly 

Since products like liquid eyeliner and mascaras contain water, they need to contain preservatives. Because the product is used close to the eyes, any kind of microbial contamination could result in an eye infection, so it is very important to use a broad-spectrum preservative to preserve eye products. 

Creating a full broad-spectrum preservative system by using a preservative booster and/or chelating agent in addition to a preservative blend is a good idea. At the same time we need to make sure none of these ingredients irritate the eye.

Our mascara and eyeliner formulas have been sent for professional preservative efficacy testing (PET), also known as challenge testing, and they passed with a Criteria A pass, the highest pass they can achieve. This means they are preserved effectively and are safe for consumer use. We share copies of the test reports with you, you’ll see exactly how we created our preservative system and you’ll gain confidence in preserving your own formulas properly, too. 

And, yes, the preservatives we used are permitted in natural and organic makeup and approved by the COSMOS standards.
