Karen Martin is a graduate of our Certificate in Making Natural Skincare Products and Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation and her story is sure to strike a chord with many of you who are thinking of making the choice to learn how to create natural skincare for yourselves.

For Karen, like so many people we talk to, it was a choice she made for her family’s health.

Karen started her journey when illness struck her mother, who was already living with a diagnosis of diabetes when she developed lung cancer. Shocked to see the effect that chemotherapy and radiation treatment was having on her mom, Karen wanted to do whatever she could to support her mother’s system and help her body to heal.

Karen made the decision to change everything her mother was eating, wearing, and using on her body.

She came to believe it was vital to get rid of anything that contained chemicals or synthetics, and that purely natural ingredients were the only choice to limit her mother’s exposure to harmful toxins.

When Karen herself later developed hyperthyroidism, her doctors couldn’t tell her why or what the cause of it was.

It was a lightbulb moment.

She decided to throw out everything and anything in her own life that contained chemicals. And that’s when she came to us to learn how to make her own natural skincare products.

These days Karen uses this knowledge to make a real difference in her life and says she can see the benefits of making her own natural products for herself and her family, every single day.

We caught up with Karen to ask her a few questions.

Q: tell us – what has been the best thing about learning to formulate your own skincare?

There’s nothing better than having the freedom to create the products I want and knowing exactly what goes into them. On top of that, there’s the cost – it’s hard to believe how much you can save. But the best experience has been to watch our skin become healthy as we use the products … and in such a short space of time.

When my daughter started having eczema, I knew exactly what to do.

I created a butter for her that works very well. I could see the results straight away, and see the difference it was making in my family’s life. And that’s an amazing feeling.

Q: Have you got any tips for aspiring natural cosmetic formulators about starting to formulate products?

Yes.  I would say go ahead and spend the funds and take the class; learn to create your own products for your health and well-being.

I strongly believe that whatever goes into our bodies should be beneficial to it and not harm it.  Plus, when friends see the difference in your skin they will want you to formulate for them as well!

Q: Why did you decide to study with us?

Actually, I found you by accident!

When I was trying to find a solution to the health issues I was experiencing, I was doing a lot of research online on how to make my own products, and that’s when I came across the school’s website.

After doing some research, I decided to enroll.

Q: What’s most important for you in terms of the products you make and use?

What’s really important to me is that the materials I put into my products are pure and natural, and, if possible, organic.

Authenticity and integrity are at the heart of everything I do, and it’s also very important to me that the environment is not harmed by my actions

If you are inspired by Karen’s story and would like to make your own natural & organic products, why not start with our Free Natural Beauty Recipe Book here. Whilst it won’t teach you the full story, it does contain a collection of safe, effective and gorgeous recipes that you can try out at home.

For the fast track to creating truly safe and effective products for yourself, you’ll need to join one of our online courses.

If you are a beginner like Karen was, our Certificate in Making Natural Skincare Products is probably the best place to start. There are over 120+ natural skincare recipes that will help you to make a complete range of products to use at home. This course won’t teach you how to create products from scratch, but it will teach you the fundamentals of making skincare products by following recipes.

If you want more than that, like Karen did, then our Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation is probably what you’re looking for. Here you’ll learn how to create your own products from scratch like a professional without following recipes. You’ll become the independent creator of your own masterpieces, rather than someone that needs to rely on other people’s recipes.

Karen did both courses because she wanted to go from Beginner to Formulator and be certain that her methods, knowledge and skill were all top notch. Becoming professional doesn’t mean you have to remove the DiY essence; you simply replace the inaccurate DiY approach, the mistakes and misconceptions with the right way to do things. DiY Done Professionally if you like!
